Age is no barrier but it's always nice to pit yourself against others in your category. You can go guts for garters or meander, it's your call but why not have a sporting chance?
Age categories are for 'Le'Originale', 'Short & Stout' and 'Flowrider' events.
Single Speed
U20, Open 20-39, Masters 40-49, Veterans 50-59, Legends 60+ (Men & Women)
Keeping it simple is the theme. There's something to be said for the purity of riding one gear that only those in the know will appreciate. It could be considered a little primal and uncouth in modern day times but the synergy between rider and trail is the essence of mountain biking.
Race Director's Note - Single speed euphoria is not to be taken lightly!
Single Speed categories are for 'Le'Originale', 'Short & Stout' and 'Flowrider' events.
Retro
Open category - sorry folks retro has no gender divide.
There's something intriguing about the 'retro' rider as they fly past and defy the laws of physics the techno-maniacs have us believe with a seemingly disregard for modern fashion trends thought up by those sipping lattes. Like Romanesque art the 'retro' rider paints a picture of the past and is one for the ages.
Race Director's Note - Retro rider rides; cantilever or v-brakes (no disc brakes), no suspension, no clip-in pedals, no carbon or titanium and drinks espresso or tea (optional)
Retro category is only for 'Le'Originale' 72km event.
Clydesdale
One for the Fellas
For riders that prefer pure power over power to weight and don't care for carbon fibre bottle cages. If you like to eat, drink and enjoy the good life why should you have to compete against calorie counting racing sardines?
Men will tip the scales at 100kg.
Race Director's Note - The Colville Connection isn't the Olympics folks so don't expect to see a set of scales on the stage, we really couldn't care about a couple kilos.
Clydesdale category is only for 'Le'Originale' 72km event.
Tandem
Open Category
One bike and two engines. The 72km course is a perfect outing for both experienced and novice tandem riders. Tandem rides are as much about knowing the other person as pedaling, why not share those Coromandel vistas with another?
Race Directors Note - Tandems can be a character building experience, be nice to your legend partner out there, we know you love each other even if it gets tough
Tandem category is only for 'Le'Originale' 72km event.
Connection Crisis
We want you to have a great day out so if your day didn't quite go to plan come tell us what happened; we're a friendly bunch so don't be shy. We'll flick the person who had an exceptionally tough day a little something to compensate.
Race Directors Note - Don't sweat the small stuff team, it's just a mountain bike event - be happy.
Style King and Queen
Create a carnival environment, retro look, body paint yourself or crank your super human 'biker' alter ego. Whatever you're into express it! If it looks like a hard call we'll get a few finalists to get on the stage for a crowd vote. Any event, age or category can be up for it.
Race Directors Note - Just remember to keep it PG13 guys and girls, it's a family event after all.
Team Categories
Open Mixed, Family Teams, Corporate Teams
Local pelotons, mountain bike clubs, drinking buddies, friends, families and work mates get a team of 3-6 riders together for a weekend roadie to the Coromandel.
Race Directors Note - Teams are of 3-6 competitors with the best average time taking line honours.
Team categories are only for 'Le'Originale' 72km event

Bare-foot
Fastest Barefooter
We don't really mean no shoes as such but with the cult like following bare-foot running is currently gaining we figure we should have a little title for it.
